Using the ‘route print’ Command in Windows 7

The ‘route print’ Command from an Administrative Command Prompt in Windows 7 provides a variety of useful information. Let’s take a look at the output of a ‘route print’ Command to examine how the output data is grouped and to understand its logic.

Let’s begin by simply issuing the following command:

route print

An Administrative Command Prompt output shows the following the following sections of the Command Output:

Observing the output of the Command indicates there are 5 Major Sections. The Sections include:

Interface List
IPv4 Route Table
IPv4 Persistent Routes
IPv6 Route Table
IPv6 Persistent Routes

On this Workstation a single Physical Network Interface is visible and has been assigned a DHCP Address of ‘10.1.1.36′.

The IP Stack for this Workstation is as follows:

IP Address: 10.1.1.36
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1
DNS Server: 10.1.1.1
DHCP Server: 10.1.1.1
DNS Suffix: YYY.YYY.isp-provider.net

Most of the time our focus is upon the IPv4 Routing Table output. Here are the sections of the IPv4 Routing Table output for reference.

The next IPv4 Routing Table entry indicates ‘10.1.1.36′ (the Host Workstation’ is a member of the ‘10.1.1.1/24′ Network and would route packets out the ‘10.1.1.36′ Interface.

The next IPv4 Routing Table entry indicates ‘10.1.1.36′ may receive a Broadcast from the ‘10.1.1.0/24′ Network (as noted by the Subnet Mask of ‘255.255.255.255′).

Figure 4 - The Workstation Host at '10.1.1.36' can offer a Broadcast on the '10.1.1.0/24 Network' (as noted by the 255.255.255.255 Subnet Mask).

Another IPv4 Routing Table entry focused on Broadcast Addresses is the following. The Host Workstation at ‘10.1.1.36′ may offer Network Broadcasts to the ‘10.1.1.0/24′ Network.

The next IPv4 Routing Table entries (3 of them) are focused on the Loopback Network Values of ‘127.0.0.0/8′, ’127.0.0.1/32′ and the Loopback Network Address of ‘127.255.255.255/32′ respectively. These Addresses provide Services to the Local Host (or Loopback Adapter). The Loopback Network Destination of ‘127.0.0.0′ provides access to the Loopback Network through ‘127.0.0.1′ the Loopback IP Address. The Loopback IP Address of ‘127.0.0.1/32′ receives Limited Local Broadcast to the Loopback Network while the Loopback IP Address of ‘127.255.255.255/32′ provides Limited Broadcast to the Loopback Network.

Figure 6 - The Workstation Host at '10.1.1.36' uses 3 Addresses for Services to the 'Local Host'. All 3 Addresses incorporate the '127.x.x.x' format.

Next the Routing Table includes 2 specific entries for the Multicast Network (224.0.0.0/4) for both the ‘Local Host’ or Loopback Address of ‘127.0.0.1′ and the Host IP Address of ‘10.1.1.36′ that are ‘224.0.0.0/4′ . These are used for Multicast Network functions.

Figure 7 - The Workstation Host at '10.1.1.36' includes 2 Multicast Addresses (starting with '240.0.0.0') reserved for use through either the Loopback Address '127.0.0.1' or the Host IP Address '10.1.1.36'.

The last 2 Routing Table entries provides Services through Limited Broadcast Addresses. The Network Destination of ‘255.255.255.255/32′ are the Limited Broadcast Address Ranges for both the Loopback Adapter ‘127.0.0.1′ and the Host IP Address ‘10.1.1.36′.

Figure 8 - The Workstation Host at '10.1.1.36' includes 2 Limited Broadcast IP Address Values to Service both the Loopback Network '127.0.0.1' and the Host IP Network '10.1.1.36'.

Finally, upon understanding the sections of the Windows 7 Routing Table there are additional functions available when using the ‘route’ Command. This Blog entry is focused solely on output from the ‘route print’ Command.

Forefront Security for Exchange SP1: Protecting Your Microsoft Exchange Organization with Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server - TechNet Article

The Forefront Security for Exchange SP1 (FSE SP1) Technical Writing Team has done a good job outlining the considerations and merits for using Forefront Security for Exchange SP1 to reduce Anti-Virus and Spam using the combination of Anti-Virus Products inherant to FSE SP1. In the article, titled 'Protecting Your Microsoft Exchange Organization with Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server' the perspective of Inbound Scanning, Outbound Scanning and Internal Scanning (i.e. never leaving through an Outbound SMTP Gateway to another SMTP Namespace) is addressed. Being a 'visual learner' I summarize a portion of the Microsoft Technet Article with the following Diagrams offered as part of the article content:

If we follow the inbound SMTP messages we see in a configuration where each of the respective Exchange 2007 Messaging Servers includes FSE SP1 that the Edge Transport Server Role will pickup the bulk of Spam and Virus laden e-mail while the Hub Transport and Mailbox Server Roles do not require FSE SP1 scanning.

The outbound SMTP messages are transferred to the Mailbox Server Role then immediately (based upon Exchange 2007 Mail Routing requirements) passed to the Hub Transport Server Role for Scanning and Stamping and then to the Edge Transport Server role for outbound delivery to the intended mail Target.

For an SMTP message sent within an Organization from a Sender to a Recipient in the same SMTP Domain follows routing through the Mailbox Server 1 Role (Sender Malbox) to the Hub Transport Server for Scanning and Stamping to the Mailbox Server 2 Role (Recipient Mailbox) for delivery.

Finally, if we add Forefront Online Security for Exchange Services outside of the Corporate Network (in the Diagrams where the 'Internet Cloud' resides) we can even further reduce on-premise Scanning for Anti-Virus and Spam in a measurable way. Take some time to review this article. It's worth the effort and offers real insight into how reducing Spam and Virus-laden e-mail can increase productivity!

How to determine if I am an Open Relay for SMTP?

Let me walk through navigating to the Web Site for the Exchange Server Remote Connectivity Analyzer Beta, and then invoking one of the tests titled 'Inbound SMTP Email Test' to demonstrate the output.

1. Navigate to 'www.testexchangeconnectivity.com'. You should see an 'https' connection to 'https://www.exchangeconnectivity.com/'.

2. Select the 5th test from the top titled 'Inbound SMTP Email Test', then 'Next'.

3. On the next Screen input values in the 'Email Address Field' under the Section titled 'Account and Test Details'. Here you can input a Test User Mailbox*. Input the hologram value in the 'Verification' field as displayed upon the Screen (as with all Verification methods, the hologram changes within several seconds, so be prompt!).

* The Exchange Server Remote Connectivity Analyzer Team recommends (as do I) creation of a separate 'Test User Mailbox(es)' for purposes of these various tests. Upon completion of these tests that Test User Mailbox would then be deleted.

4. Upon succesful validation of an SMTP Domain available at the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN or @domain.com) associated with the Test User Mailbox, the testing begins. You will receive feedback right away indicating 'Connectivity Test Successful' or 'Connectivity Test Failed'. Additionally, if you select the 'plus sign' next to the 'Test Steps' listing you will see the sequential steps of testing and the response feedback for each step.

5. If you receive a succesful 'Inbound SMTP Email Test' response and then expand the 'Test Steps' you can follow several of the 'Test Steps' to understand what is examined. Here the testing entailed a DNS MX Record lookup followed by an SMTP 'EHLO' response to the targeted Server.

6. Further examination of the succesful 'Inbound SMTP Email Test' indicates an attempt to send a test e-mail to the targeted Test Mailbox User. We use each of the Test Results to validate proper DNS Configuration, SMTP Mailflow, SMTP Command Response and Pattern.

As mentioned previously, a number of Tests are available through the Exchange Server Remote Connectivity Analyzer Web Site. Each of these Tests promotes use of a 'Temporary Test Mailbox User' account.

The Microsoft Exchange Server Remote Connectivity Analyzer Team has done a fine job with this free Web Site to assist with configuration of Exchange Server 2007! Well done!

I was reading a Blog entry from Doug Gowans, Microsoft Consulting Services UK who referenced a Colleague, Gerod Serafin also of Microsoft Corporation who (Gerod that is) posted an extremely useful Library of Blog entries comparing Exchange 2003 Administrative actions compared to the same Exchange 2007 Administrative action. Update Rollup 6 for Exchange Server 2007 SP1 (KB959241)

In the prior month the Exchange Team offered Ex2k7 SP1 Update Rollup 6. This cumulative Rollup includes all prior fixes and can be applied to any Ex2k7 SP1 Server.

It's important to note several things with UR6:

Modifications to custom Outlook Web Access Forms require a separate Backup/Restore following application of this Rollup.
Exchange 2007 SP1 Servers unable to access the Certificate Revocation List (CRL) Point for Microsoft Signed Code within Exchange 2007 SP1 will issue Event Errors.
Uninstall occurs for this Rollup using 1) Control Panel, then, 2) Add/Remove Programs
A Full Backup (with tested Restore capabilities) is recommended prior to installing this Update Rollup.

Forefront Threat Management Gateway Beta 2 Released

Additionally, as part of the larger Blogging Community, Adrian Dimcev has offered a Screen Capture rundown (referenced as 'Quickly Print Screening!') of both Beta 1 and Beta 2. Lots of new features in TMG Beta 2 worth noting. Hyper-V - Required Reading for the Hyper-V System Engineer

The author, Trina Gorman and editor, Katie Cumming offer good insight into a simple WDS deployment. Since that time, and after reading 100s of Microsoft TechNet Articles combined with chapters from various Authors I am offering an update to the list of required reference materials. In addition to the books referenced in the prior Blog entry, here's my current favorites:

Some insights into each of these books:

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 - Tony Redmond's Guide to Successful Implementation (Tony Redmond) - by far the best book on the market for experienced Exchange System Engineers. Tony covers everything from API changes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2007 Powershell Commandlets useful for the large enterprise Administrator. If you are working with Clients to transition them (or migrate them) from Exchange 2003 (or other SMTP systems) this is a definitive guide. The author includes numerous valueable insights into many of the new capabilities in Exchange 2007 and the shortest route to making them available to end users. Additionally, many of the professional insights gained by the author in working with prior versions of Exchange are evident by examples of how the Exchange 2007 Development Team has improved, modified or eliminate specific functions. I repeat, this is one of the best resources available for experienced Exchange System Engineers.

Windows Powershell for Exchange Server 2007 SP1 (Joezer Cookey-Gam, Brendan Keane, Jeffrey Rosen, Jonathan Runyan and Joel Stidley) - this is the new standard for Exchange Powershell reference books. The authors cover everything from using setup parameters for unattended installs to very detailed use of the Powershell 1.0 Environment for Administration, Configuration, Reporting and Documentation. An excellent resource for System Administrators considering Powershell Scripting. The authors (several from Microsoft Consulting Services) include detail specific to Exchange Powershell Commandlets focused exclusively on Exchange Server 2007 SP1. I particularly appreciate the clarity with which the authors use Pipelining of Exchange Powershell Commandlets in examples. Each example provides useful insights into Administering from a Command Line Interface (CLI).

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-236): Configuring Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 (Ian McLean, Orin Thomas) - the material in this book focuses on many of the tasks associated with transitioning from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. These tasks range from User Administration to proper Connector configuration for coexistence. The Authors provide useful Exchange Powershell Commandlets continually for reference. Additionally, you will find detailed instructions on how to use tools like Message Tracking and Queue Viewer, along with Monitoring an Exchange 2007 Enironment using the output from Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 and Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007. The authors provide 'real world' experiences throughout the book and offer valid examples easily referenced in many Production environments.

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-237): Designing Messaging Solutions with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 (Paul Mancuso, David Miller and Sam Sena) - the material in this book focuses on Backup and Recovery, High Availability and Messaging Records Management. If you are looking for reference materials regarding Transport, messaging classification and establishing compliance standards this book provides that detail. Additionally, if you are establishing procedures for Disaster Recovery for Exchange Server 2007, you definately need this book in your library. The detailed materials focused on Backup methodology, using Recovery Storage Groups and proper input into edbutil from a command line makes this a useful reference.

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-238): Deploying Messaging Solutions with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 (Nelson Reust and Danielle Ruest) - the material in this kit is quite thorough and covers the considerations for deploying Exchange 2007 whereby the starting point may be from various perspectives. Specifically, if you are considering transitioning to Exchange 2007 and need to understand the requirements for server installation, the Exchange 2007 server roles, how your Active Directory environment will be effected or the effects of interoperability with existing mail-enabled applications. Additionally, I found the Chapter on Transport Rules and Compliance some of the best reference material I found on filtering messages in Transport Rules for character patterns (Customer Information for example). This kit is required reading as it includes numerous charts, checklists and detailed technical requirements for successful deployments of Exchange Server 2007 SP1.

Finally I would state each of these books has a place in a well-rounded (not literally, of course!) Exchange System Engineers library. I would not recommend taking on a large Exchange 2007 SP1 deployment without any of them!

SC Operations Manager 2007 SP1 - SQL Server Management Pack 11-2008

The SC Operations Manager Team has updated the SQL Management Pack to include SQL 2008. Additionally, this new MP includes a number of new or improved views and monitoring capabilities for both SQL2k5 and SQL2k8. Here's the bulleted list from the download page:

Support for Enterprise, Standard and Express editions of SQL Server 2000, 2005 and 2008 and 32bit, 64bit and ia64 architectures.

Support for both simple and complex SQL configurations such as clustered installations, multiple instances and 32bit roles running on a 64bit OS. For full details on supported configurations refer to the guide included with the management pack.

Discovery and monitoring of SQL Server roles such as DB Engine, Reporting Services, Analysis Services, Integrations Services.

Discovery of SQL components such as databases, the SQL Agent and SQL jobs.

Over 20 views covering areas such as database free space, SQL related performance, SQL related alerts, and lists of the various SQL roles and components which are discovered and their related state.

Reports for longer-term analysis of common problem areas related to SQL Server such as SQL Server lock analysis and top deadlocked databases, SQL Server service pack levels across discovered roles, user connection activity. Monitoring of databases covers database status, database free space, log shipping monitoring for both the source and destination, and transaction log free space.

Monitoring for persistent SPID blocking.

Monitoring of numerous SQL events and performance data points. Alerts bring the issue to your attention and provide knowledge on the impact and possible resolutions.

Initial client and Lab testing indicates this MP is in good shape.

Virtual PC 2007 SP1 Availability

In May 2008 Microsoft made available the download for Virtual PC 2007 SP1. I still have several workstations in the ITPS Lab that use Virtual PC 2007 so I will make the move to update these machines to the latest Virtual PC 2007 codebase.

The 'buzz' with Windows 2008 and Hyper-V have been so great (and consumed so much of my time learning) in the virtualization space that I missed the Virtual PC 2007 SP1 update!

Reviewing the Basics of the Hyper-V Administrative Interface

Microsoft Hyper-V offers a variety of useful capabilities when virtualizing servers and associated applications in a data center environment. If you are seeing the Hyper-V Administrative interface for the first time its important to keep in mind the more time spent using the interface the less challenging the various settings become (like many things in our lives!). Let's take a look at the Hyper-V MMC (Microsoft Management Console) without focusing on Windows 2008 Server installation, Hyper-V installation, Network Interface Card (NIC) configuration, or any of the other steps required to adminstrate a server using Hyper-V. We'll simply dig into Hyper-V, then in other Blog entries follow steps for setup, configuration, etc. of Hyper-V. If you have ever wondered what the Hyper-V GUI entails here is your entry!

Configuration Steps: Using the 'netstat' Command to determine if a Port is Open in Windows 2008 or Windows Vista

The 'netstat' command has been around for many years and on multiple Operating Systems. We will briefly review 3 netstat parameters useful on both Windows 2008 and Windows Vista. If you have ever been asked the question by a colleague, 'How do I tell if RDP is listening on Port TCP 3389 for Server XYZ'? I will show you an example of how to use the netstat command to see if a server is listening on a specific port using the find parameter.

Here are our 3 commands for this example:

'netstat' - indicates 1) Protocol, 2) Local Address, 3) Foreign Address, and 4) State (of Connection).
'netstat -aon' - indicates 1) Protocol, 2) Local Address, 3) Foreign Address, 4) State and 5) Process ID (PID).
'netstat -an | find ":3389' - indicates any Local IP Address listening on TCP 3389 (default Protocol and Port for Remote Desktop (RDP))

Here are our 3 commands in action in a Windows Vista SP1 Command Window (if you like how clear this Windows appears take a look at my Blog Entry titled '

Command 1 - 'netstat' - offers us a clear picture by protocol as to Local Ports open and to which Foreign Address (remote host).

Command 2 - 'netstat - aon' - provides similar detail with the addition of IPV6 information and specific Process IDs (PIDs).

Command 3 - 'netstat -an | find ":3389' - provides affirmation by IP Address of servers maintaining an open connection on TCP 3389.

Enjoy using this much overlook utility found in both Windows 2008 and Windows Vista!

ISA Server 2006 Operations Guide

While reviewing other Technical Blogs this morning I came across an entry by Dr. Thomas Shinder who identified the online version of the ISA Operations Guide. It turns out I was researching a 'general purpose' operations guide for several clients focused on ISA 2006 EE, so the timing was terrific! Although this Operations Guide is fairly general in its content, I would (and am) recommending it as an operational reference. A quick read of this Guide denotes some of the 'Daily, Weekly and Monthly' operational procedures required to support ISA 2006 EE in production. Again, a worthwhile reference for the many ISA 2006 EE installations in data centers across the globe.

Working with Powershell and a Command Prompt using the Consolas Font Pack

I have found the more time invested in Powershell for Exchange 2007 and Operations Manager 2007 Administration the more the reality of using a Command Windows that is viewable. I have invested in good quality Monitors and find myself sitting closer to the Monitor based solely on the Application in use. A number of months back (I know, I know, many months back) Bill Hill, Program Manager for the Internet Explorer Team posted a good article on why using the new Microsoft Consolas Font Pack is a good thing. After working with the Consolas Font Pack install on every Lab and Client Server available I have to admit it makes a big difference when prolonged reading of a Command Windows is necessary.

The big differences is using a mono-spaced font in a Command Window and how Cleartype renders that font. Don't take my word for it though, give it a try. There are just a couple of steps involved in configuration. Here they are:

Download and Install the Consolas Font Pack using the .MSI File Format.
Add the following Registry Key
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont" /v 00 /d Consolas
Logoff the Server or Workstation (my experience is a Reboot may be required for 'older' Operating Systems (WinXP).
Open a Command Window, Right Mouse Click then select 'Properties' of the Windows, then navigate to the 'Font' Tab, then select Consolas (if you don't see Consolas as a selectable Font the Registry Key was not written correctly).
Select a Size of 20 or higher.
Select the 'Colors' Tab and then the 'Screen Text' modal button, then select 'White' (for example).

Save the Settings then launch a new Command Window. You should see a much clearer font in a larger format onscreen. One of the added benefits of this Font Family is it can be used in any Command Window. So, the more 'Powershell-ing' you do the more you will want this clarity!

Ex2k7 SP1 Update Rollup 2 now supercedes all prior Ex2k7 SP1 Rollups. If you are using Ex2k7 (referred to as Ex2k7 RTM) this Rollup IS NOT FOR YOU! You should first advance to Ex2k7 SP1 then apply the Ex2k7 SP1 Rollup 2 below.

SC Operations Manager 2007 SP1 - SCOM2k7 SP1 SCW Roles and the Security Hardening Guide for Win2k3 Server

Along with the many 'usability improvements' in SCOM2k7 SP1 we are beginning to see additional signs of an Operational Management Product that is maturing in the marketplace, both in acceptance and in useful capabilities. Release of the Security Configuration Wizard (SCW) Role Specific Templates for SCOM2k7 SP1 indicates the significant attempt to optimize and secure SCOM2k7 SP1 Deployments is underway.

In addition, release of the Security Hardening Guide for SCOM2k7 SP1 for Windows 2003 provides 'some' insights for incorporating the functions made available in the SCOM2k7 SP1 Templates for the SCW. I would not recommend using the SCOM2k7 SP1 SCW Templates without a 1) thorough understanding of the Security Configuration Wizard, then, 2) experience with SCOM2k7 SP1! Perhaps in a future release of the Security Hardening Guide for SCOM2k7 SP1 additional insights and beneficial detailed examples will be made available for reference.

Security Audit Events for Windows 2008 and Windows Vista

I field numerous questions from Clients regarding Security Audit Event values when configuring Security Settings and SC Operations Manager 2007 Monitors and Rules. Finally, a single Worksheet has been generated by Microsoft which begins to document Security Audit Events instead of referencing 3 or 5 'Security Guides' that partially reference specific Audit Event values.

Several observations regarding this Security Audit Event Worksheet are appealing. Specifically, the ability to use the Excel Worksheet 'Data Filter' capability to isolate a single Event ID by Number. Also, when writing detailing SCOM2k7 Monitors we can focus on generating a legible Event Description detail. If you have wrestled with Outlook AnyWhere (RPC over HTTP or RPC over HTTPS rather!) suddenly stopping after applying a Software Update on your ISA2k6 Configuration titled 'Update for Publishing Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 for ISA Server 2006' you will find a fix for this problem at the link that follows.

System Center Capacity Planner 2007 Release Candidate (RC)

If you have the requirement to plan for Exchange 2007 (who doesn't?) you will find the latest Build of the System Center Capacity Planner 2007 (SCCP2k7) available through the Microsoft Connect Web Site. The SCCP2k7 is a Capacity Planning Tool that 'models' an Exchange 2007 Configuration detailing things like 1) Number of Servers, 2) Server by Role, 3) Client Processing Capacity, 4) Disk Drive Requirements, 5) Processor Requirements, 6) Wide Area Network Link Consumption and many additional details. Virtual Machine Remote Control Client Plus - V1.6

Virtual Machine Remote Control Client Plus has revved to V1.6 (from V1.5 of course!) with some additional functionality and completion of functionality previously available within the Product. The author of VMRCC+ (the original Designer was Paul Despe - with Matthijs ten Seldam owning modifications and design beginning at V1.5 and going forward) has authored a good article in TechNet Magazine - October 2007 Edition that includes the download location for VMRCC+ V1.6. Configuration Steps - How to Resolve the Vista Backup Error 0x8007045D in Vista Ultimate

Several months back I encountered an Error 0x8007045D when attempting a Full Backup in Windows Vista to a Portable USB 2.0 Hard Disk. I did a bit of research and discovered that others were having similar problems. Based on the fact that a Backup/Restore Capability is so critical to day to day operations I pursued the remedy pretty hard! I found a TechNet Forum link that provided enough general information to resolve this Vista Backup Error 0x8007045D in Vista Ultimate. I do not have the full technical details but understand by observation this has something to do with the Volume Shadow Copy Service not releasing the Drive Partition in a way the Backup Application comprehends (sorry for the lack of specifics!).

Here are the steps I used to resolve the Vista Backup Error 0x8007045D in Vista Ultimate in my configuration (you may have to adjust for other Variables like Anti-Virus or Disk Encryption!):

Login in the User Context as 'Local Administrator' in Windows Vista Ultimate. In this example I am logging in using a Domain User Account that is also a Local Administrator on this Windows Vista Ultimate Workstation.

Select the 'Computer' object and then select 'Properties'. This invokes the 'System' Application. Another approach for accessing the 'System' Application is simply 'Start', 'Control Panel' then 'System'.

Now Select the 'System Application' Task in the upper right hand corner. This invokes the 'System Properties'.

Using the 'System Properties' dialogue Windows move to the 'System Protection' Tab. On the 'System Protection Tab' identify the Local Hard Disk targeted for Backup. Under 'Available Disks' uncheck the box indicating the last Restore Point, then, select 'Apply' in the lower left corner. Immediately re-check the box next to the 'Available Disks' (you are creating a new Restore Point now) and then select 'Apply' again. Effectively, what you should have done is cleared the box - applied the change - selected the box- applied the change in that order.

If everything worked as planned you should be able to begin (and COMPLETE) a Full Backup of this targeted Hard Disk.

SC Operations Manager 2007 - Database Storage Calculator

Satya Vel from the SC OM2k7 Team has offered an 'unofficial' Database Storage Calculator in the form of an Excel Worksheet for determining the 'rough estimated size' of both the Operations Manager Database and the Data Warehouse for the Operations Manager Database.

The 'official' mechanism for calculating Storage Requirements for Operations Manager 2007 is the System Center Capacity Planner 2007 (which remains in Beta as of this writing) but is available through the Microsoft Connect Web Site to Beta Participants.

Here are the Worksheet settings to calculate the Operations Manager Database Size. The primary Variables for Input include 'Number of Days to Keep Data', 'Number of Client Computers' and 'Number of Server Computers'.

The Input Variables for the Operations Manager 2007 Data Warehouse are similar. Note the size differential in the Warehouse Database (due to the longer term storage of data) when compared to the Operations Manager Database (where individual Alerts are collected and acted upon).

SC Operations Manager 2007 - Exchange 2007 Management Pack Release

I have worked with a large group of Clients deploying both Exchange Server 2007 and System Center Operations Manager 2007 in Production. Our challenge has been the fact that the Ex2k7 Management Pack for SC OM2k7 has not been available (the Ex2k7 Management Pack for MOM2k5 has been available for some time) causing me to develop an individual Management Pack to Monitor Services, TCP Ports and Performance Data. Now, with the release of the Ex2k7 Management Pack for SC OM2k7 we should begin to harvest real Performance Data while tailoring Alert Thresholds unique to Exchange 2007.

ISA 2006 Supportability Update

The Microsoft ISA2k6 Team has released a useful Supportability Update for ISA Server (both ISA2k4 and ISA2k6). You can download this Update here:

Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006 Supportability Update

There are number of valuable Options this Supportability Update offers. These Options were designed with the ISA Administrator in mind and include the following:

Improvements to the ISA Server Management Console with the addition of a new Troubleshooting Node
Enhanced Log Viewing functionality
Additional Log Filter functionality
Diagnostic Logging, including over 200 new Diagnostic Logging Events
Integration with the Microsoft ISA Server Best Practices Analyzer Tool

Below you will observe an ISA2k6 Enterprise Edition Configuration installed on a Single Server.

The ISA 2006 Enterprise Edition Configuration with the Supportability Update installed.

A quick review of this Array Server Properties indicates detail about ISA 2006 Enterprise Edition.

The Supportability Update adds a New 'Troubleshooting' Node to the 'Array' and 'Server' Tree. We can invoke any of the Supportability Options from this Console Tree.

Here I select the 'Configuration Diagnostic Logging' option and begin viewing the various options for Configuring Diagnostic Logging.

Additionally, after Diagnostic Logging is configured we see a New Event Log specfically for 'ISA Server Diagnostics'. An associated ISA Server Diagnostic Event Window is displayed.

When I move to the 'Monitoring' Option in the 'Array' Tree we now see the dynamic collection of Log Data. Note the 'Denied Connection' types display in Red.

Another useful feature of the Supportability Updte includes the ability to dynamically save or load Filter Definitions. Here I initiate loading a dynamic Firewall Filter Definition from an XML File.

I select a previously saved Dynamic Filter Definition that Scopes in on a specific Server by IP Address (192.168.1.58 for Example). I perform this Action to isolate all Traffic from this Destination IP Address.

The Filter Definition allows almost limitless filtering of realtime (and logged) data.

I observe traffic from my ISA2k6 EE Server to the System Center Operations Manager 2007 Management Server generated by the SCOM2k7 Agent on the ISA2k6 Client.

The ISA2k6 Best Practice Analyzer (ISA2k6 BPA) can be invoked directly from the 'Troubleshooting' Tree Node. I will not review the other Troubleshooting Capabilities in the Supportability Update in this Blog entry. Instead I will use them in separate Blog entries to highlight the depth of Troubleshooting now available with ISA2k6 EE (and Standard Edition).

Here is one Output from the ISA2k6 Best Practice Analyzer. Again, the Troubleshooting Capabilities available in the Supportability Update is rich!

As of the release of this document we are not yet to Win2k3 RTM - but it appears the Technical Writing Team for Windows 2008 are beginning to produce documents that are applicable to Windows 2008 RC0 and possibly Windows 2008 RTM. I discovered this useful tool for Users new to Outlook 2007 while working online this morning. The interesting part about this 'dynamic flash interactive tool' is you can spend time comparing 'this is what the Menu Item did in Outlook 2003 - now here is where you find the same Menu Item on the Outlook 2007 Ribbon'. An interactive tool like this will be useful for the many questions specific to Outlook 2007 I receive.

Interactive Tool: Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007 Command Reference Guide

From the main interactive window of the Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007 Command Reference Guide I am offering an example of 'How to Create a Rule' in Outlook 2003. Once I click the 'Create a Rule' Button the interactive tool then minimizes the Outlook 2003 Window and focuses on the Outlook 2007 Steps to 'Create a Rule' in Outlook 2007.

The interactive Tool focuses on the Outlook 2007 interface and shows us the comparable steps to 'Create a Rule' in Outlook 2007. Very cool!

Here's another example specific to sending a Digital Rights Management enabled e-mail in Outlook 2003. Once selected in the Outlook 2003 interface the interactive tool re-focuses to the comparable steps in Outlook 2007.

In the Outlook 2007 interface we see the steps are slightly different from the steps in Outlook 2003. One of many changes in the Outlook 2007 interface for which this interactive tool provides a comparison.

Maintaining availability of LCS2k5 SP1 is critical when an Enterprise begins to rely on Instant Messaging in a similar fashion to e-mail. The LCS2k5 SP1 Management Pack for MOM2k5 SP1 offers good general Alerting, Service Availability Info and Rules Processing. Unfortunately, this Management Pack does not offer Reporting. I am sure the next version will based upon the 'new tight' integration from Microsoft on Unified Communications.

Windows Vista ReadyBoost Installation Steps

I opted to try one of the new features of Windows Vista (in my case I am running Windows Vista Ultimate) - ReadyBoost. What ReadyBoost offers is additional Swap File capacity using a USB Memory Stick (USB Drive). There are some specifics on what Versions of Windows Vista ReadyBoost functions with and what capacity USB Drive is required to gain performance gains using ReadyBoost.
